Intermediate Guitar Workshop with Hiroya Tsukamoto

Join us on Sunday June 5th from 9:30-11am to work with internationally acclaimed recording artist Hiroya Tsukamoto.

Hiroya is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter from Kyoto, Japan. In this workshop, you will learn various techniques of fingerstyle guitar (playing with the fingers or fingernails in place of a pick), including various chords and basic musical theory. Also using his compositions as an example, Hiroya Tsukamoto demonstrates how to start composing and developing an original guitar piece for a live setting. Learn and deconstruct the elements of song structure, including intros, verses, choruses, bridges, and outros, and how to distill your composition down to its essence. Hiroya also shares what he cares about when composing and what he is thinking when he writes. Hiroya Tsukamoto is an innovative guitarist and composer fuses folk,jazz, and world music. Born and raised in Japan, in 2000 he received a scholarship to Berklee College of music and came to the U.S.“In terms of musicianship, Tsukamoto’s guitar work was just ridiculous. Right from the beginning of his first song, it was obvious that the folks in Bernunzio’s were in for a treat. His brand of finger style guitar is so intricate, and so blazingly fast at the same time, I kept imagining how many clones I would need to make of myself to accurately replicate his sound. One song that drove that point home was his set opener, “From Coast to Coast,” a song that had some of the fastest harmonic runs I’ve heard,” wrote Trevor Lewis of the Rochester City News. Tsukamoto’s instrumental abilities are indeed breathtaking and astounding, but his performances are so much more than that. He has the unique capability of engaging an audience thru a personable and genuine approach that transfixes his audience and almost transcends his capabilities as a guitarist. Audience members will be mesmerized; Tsukamoto plays with an effortless skill on the guitar and a repertoire that will have you traveling the world, not to mention experiencing new sounds with his own compositions. Tsukamoto headlines concerts throughout the U.S. as well as internationally including Blue Note in NYC and Japanese National Television. Most recently, Hiroya won 2nd place in International Finger Style Guitar Championship in 2018. This class is intended for intermediate to advanced musicians.
