Monday, March 17, 2025 (5:00 PM - 6:30 PM) (EDT)
Description
This class is designed for students who already have basic wheel-throwing skills and some intermediate skills and want to further develop their skills to make more complex pieces. The class will cover intermediate wheel-throwing (such as throwing a 12-inch cylinder with one and one-half pounds of clay) and graduate onto construction techniques that will allow students to make teapots, covered pieces, section pots, ring jugs/arm jugs, bottles, pitchers, and other modified forms. This class will peak into the technical and molecular levels of clay and its craft. Kilian will share tips and tricks learned through 15 years of experience. Advanced techniques only seasoned potters know will be revealed throughout this class. This is not a class for beginners. Sign up now to hold your ‘wheel’!
MATERIALS LIST:
Students will be provided with a 25 lb bag of stoneware clay and a variety of glaze options.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
A major difference in Thomas Kilian’s work has been based on authenticity; he develops his glazes and clays, unlike most studio potters. Kilian started in clay at the age of eight and opened his ceramic studio in 2007 in the Inner Banks of North Carolina. His experience has yielded many accomplishments, such as creating the heritage pottery collection commissioned by North Carolina’s Cultural Resources for historic heritage sites and exhibiting his museum pieces in the exclusive Imperial Art Centre's HANDCRAFTED Exhibition of 2017 and 2022. He collaborates with Popular Forest, Old City Museums and Arboretum, and James City County (Jamestown) as a third-person interpreter, ceramic artist, and workshop instructor. Kilian specializes in heritage pottery and the history of the pottery trade. He operates a fully outfitted studio in Chatham, VA.
